Little Gardens for Little Hands
🌿 Little Gardens for Little Hands 🌼At nursery, sustainability is woven into everything we do. We love showing children how everyday items can be reused in creative and meaningful ways and gardening is one of our favourite activities for this.Gardening helps children connect with nature, learn responsibility, and experience the joy of watching something grow from a tiny seed. It’s a hands-on way to nurture curiosity and care for the world around them. One simple and fun idea is transforming empty tin cans into mini plant pots 🥫➡️🌿. After washing the can and checking the edges are safe, add a few drainage holes in the bottom before filling it with soil and seeds. Children especially love decorating their pots 🎨, adding labels 🏷️, and caring for the plants as they begin to grow. Herbs, salad leaves, wildflowers, and even strawberries can flourish in small containers like these. You don’t need special equipment to start a little garden at home! Many everyday items make excellent planters, such as:- 🥣 Yogurt pots or small food containers
- 🥚 Egg cartons for starting seedlings
- ☕ Old mugs or cups
- 🥤 Plastic bottles cut in half
- 🫙 Empty jars or tins for growing herbs on a windowsill
- 📦 Small cardboard boxes lined with foil or placed on a tray
♻️ Reusing materials like these helps reduce waste and shows children that we can be inventive with what we already have. It also makes gardening accessible to everyone, without needing to buy lots of new supplies. If you’d like to try this at home, encourage your child to decorate their container and choose what they’d like to grow. Watching something they planted themselves begin to grow can be such an exciting and rewarding experience.Sometimes the simplest ideas can inspire the biggest adventures! ✨
