Each week, we update the focus for learning across the nursery with additional key information for each colour adventurer group.

Skill of the Week- Rainbow Values

Provocations

-Design an animal of your own using different animal parts

-Tuff tray set up with X-ray images and pattern resources, inviting children to explore, handle, and look closely at the images.

-Cutting table set up with paper, paper straws, and envelopes, inviting children to freely explore cutting, snipping, and joining materials. Children can notice the different textures and strengths of each material as they cut

OUTSIDE PROVOCATIONS

-Explore tools such as scissors, rolling pins, and cutters, supporting children to chop and combine herbs into the dough,

-Tuff tray set up with tissue paper, scissors, and jungle animal small-world figures, inviting children to cut, tear, and arrange materials to create imaginative jungle scenes.

-Use your scissor skills to create paper chains-Re purpose tin cans, bug hotels and planting.

Story of the Week- Piper the Puppy Goes to School

Read book together daily and pause to encourage children to join in with repeated key phrases
Use simple sequencing language (first, next, last) and invite join in with repeated words
Model clear, short sentences linked to pictures and leave gaps
Copy actions and say the action words aloud together
Repeat vocabulary regularly and encourage to echo and repeat words after the adult.

Extend Learning;

Story map (first, next, last) and support to talk through the journey aloud, building confidence to speak to others.

·Tell the story to a partner or small group, using pictures or props.
Ask open-ended questions to encourage fuller responses: “What happened next?” “Can you tell me the story?”
Use story language and model new vocabulary when retelling.
Support to speak in short sequences of sentences, not just single words, building confidence in sharing their ideas.

Encourage to cross the midline, reaching one hand across their body as they move.

Add whole-body movements linked to the rhyme, encouraging children to stretch, sway, and move side to side, supporting coordination and creativity

Develop awareness of sounds and rhythms through jungle movements and actions (

Encourage to join in with repeated sound patterns from the story

Use body percussion, talk about the sounds we make with our bodies and what they represent

Play listening games where children identify and copy sounds made by the adult.

Aspect 7: Oral blending and segmenting

Model oral blending with positional language from the story and encourage children to join in

Support oral segmenting by breaking words into sounds during jungle play and repeating together as children move through spaces in the Nursery.

Encourage to listen for and say the first sound in words linked to the story

Forest School Adventures

This week is our last forest school session of the year... Richard is going to be preparing something very special which includes his favourite pirate story and creating something magical to take home to treasure.

COOKING SKILL-MIXING

Explore non-fiction books to find out where ingredients come from links to Africa/America playing in the World Cup. Talk about how foods travel to us and what we need to make fritters/loaf/food of choice
Show banana or sweet potato, flour, name and touch them, discussing what each ingredient is used for.
Mash the banana or soft sweet potato, then add flour. Use hands or a spoon to press, stir, and fold the mixture together.
Continue mixing until the mixture is smooth and well combined, noticing when it is no longer dry or lumpy. Talk about how we know it is “ready.”
Explore: “I wonder how we made it so smooth? What would happen if we added more mixing?”

VOCABULARY: Mash Mix Combine
ADJUSTMENTS: Use hand-over-hand guidance to support children in stirring and folding. Offer clear verbal prompts (“keep mixing… is it smooth yet?”) and allow extra time for children to explore and recognise when the mixture is fully combined.
